Weekend Binge: 5 historical dramas to add to your watchlist

Historical film is a genre that is able to transport audiences very well. Being a mixture of fact and fiction, Bollywood has a number of films that offer a great viewing experience. The latest movie in the list of such movies is Samrat Prithviraj, Star Akshay Kumar chronicles the life and times of Prithviraj Samrat, the legendary Rajput ruler. The movie is based on Prithviraj Rasoan epic poem in Braj. Samrat Prithviraj marks the debut of Manushi Chhillar as Queen Sanyogita.   1. Jodhaa Akbar – Netflix

Jodhaa Akbar is a 2008 Hindi epic film, produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. It stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles and stars actors such as Sonu Sood, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ila Arun in key roles. The main actors exude royalty and show good acting skills. The film also has some beautiful scenes worth revisiting.

  1. Manikarnika: Queen of Jhansi – Amazon Prime Video

This 2019 historical drama is based on the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai in Jhansi. It stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role and earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress at the 67th National Film Awards. The film was also released concurrently. in Tamil and Telugu.

  1. Bajirao Mastani – Amazon Prime Video

Bajirao Mastani based on the life of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I and his wife Mastani. The film stars husband and wife Ranveer Singh in real life and Deepika Padukone in the lead role. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Magnum opus also features Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai.

  1. Tanhaji: Silent Warrior

This Om Raut movie is based on the life of Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare who was a trusted lieutenant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film is played by Ajay Devgn as the main character Tanhaji. Ajay’s wife Kajol plays Savitri Bai Malusare, Tanaji’s wife, while Saif Ali Khan plays Udaybhan Singh Rathore, the royal bodyguard of the Mughal empoere Aurangzeb.

  1. Mughal-E-Azam

Considered one of the best Bollywood movies ever made, K Asif’s Mughal-E-Azam after the love affair between a court dancer Anarkali and Prince Mughal Salim (Emperor Jahangir). While Madhubala and Dilip Kumar play Anarkali and Salim respectively, Prithviraj Kapoor plays emperor Akbar, the main roadblock in this tale of star-crossed lovers.
