INTERVIEW: Anees Bazmee on Comedy Ideas, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Success, F2, No Entry, etc.

After delivering hits like Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Deewangee, No Entry, Welcome, Sing Is King, Ready and the popular Welcome Back, Anees Bazmee is back as a director with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The film has had a solid start. office won critical acclaim from the audience, showing that Anees Bazmee cinema never goes out of style. The filmmaker had a candid conversation with Pinkvilla. Excerpt from the interview:

From romantic comedy to family comedy, youth comedy and now horror comedy – how has your approach to humor changed to different areas of entertainment?

Your approach needs to change for each movie. The filming in Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha went smoothly, as it is a simple beautiful love story with a bit of humor. In Deewangee, I used the recoil in my camera to create my surroundings. Now, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is a horror comedy, so I went back to the days when my grandmother used to tell us horror stories. I was never scared when she told those stories to a group of people, but when I was alone, they freaked me out. It says that we need to create the right atmosphere in a horror movie. For Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, I tried to create an environment where people laugh and also fear. It’s a new world for me and I hope everyone enjoys it.

You’ve worked on many scripts through the pandemic, sure, most will be comedies. Is that a distraction from the real world?

I wanted to write a comedy about the pandemic, but it ended up being a romantic movie. Back in the 2000s, Akshay Kumar Ji called me after watching Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha. He asked me to write a script for him, and I tried to make a romantic movie. Very few people know that Welcome begins as an old love story. But as the writing process continues, it becomes a comedy. The story shows all those quirky characters, even though it’s essentially a Rajiv and Sajana love story. I can’t interrupt my flow as a writer. My process is to get into the tunnel, but after that, I don’t know how the tunnel ends.

Are you satisfied with the fact that the comic book genre has finally been recognized by everyone?

I used to be Raj Kapoor saab’s assistant and I have always believed in making movies well. There is a perception in the industry that the success of comedies depends on how long the actors act in the comics. Yes, that’s important, but I’ve always wondered why we can’t make a movie where situations lead to laughter. I’ve always wanted to make movies that stand the test of time. Comedies look easy on screen, but they’re hard to do. If this was an easy genre, everyone would do it. No genre has a better shelf life than comedy.

And what makes comedy difficult?

Each genre as a story to tell, has a specific path to the finale. But a comedy? A person will not know how to assemble the gags. Comedy is about execution. What is the story of No Entry and Welcome? Both of them deal with a serious problem – one about extramarital affairs and the other about gangsters. But the execution led to humour.

As a director, do the numbers make a difference for you?

I’m bad with numbers, but I love it when my movies make good money. I make commercial movies and it’s important that these movies make money. But money doesn’t make me a director. I want my producers to get their investment back and the audience to be entertained. I’m not insecure and I’m not racing for money. I don’t want to run, I just want to walk. I don’t want to make 100 movies, I’m satisfied with another 5 to 10 movies and make the audience happy. I have my needs under control and therefore, I can afford to say no to everyone.

What reunion with Kartik Aaryan after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2?

Nothing like now. Kartik is a very nice boy and I would love to work with him in the future. But after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, my whole focus will be on No Entry Mein Entry.

And what is happening on the writing front. We heard, are you also working on F2 for Boney Kapoor?

Yes, I’m writing an F2 remake for Boney Ji. It’s a great movie, but I felt the need to change a lot in the original script. So it’s done.
